Weeds Season Three: Initial Impressions

For its first season, Weeds was everything I hoped it would be and more. It pushed some boundaries, was highly satirical, made fun of stereotypes, etc etc. Then came the second season. While the first season was more about Nancy’s journey in picking up the pieces of her family, season two delved into the “seedy underbelly” of the drug world, which was where I felt the show got off track. It’s pot, not cocaine. Chances are she’d be dealing with some old hippie growing in his back yard, not Armenians. The DEA agent romance spirals out of control. Suddenly the show went from caricature to over the top, every episode was filled with chaos and “what can go wrong now?” cliffhangers.

Season three picks up exactly where season two left off, as if one large episode had been split in half. The plot advances at a snail’s pace. It would appear that all of season three will be spent playing out the events following the final episode of season two. So basically they’ve taken a storyline I hate, and dragged it out over another season.

I don’t like the new characters that have been introduced. I don’t like how any of the characters are interacting with each other, and I feel like the writing is forced and the dialogue is fake. Instead of being satirical, the show just seems out of touch. Stereotypes are reinforced instead of lampooned. I’m not even sure if I like Weeds anymore at this point, but I’ll keep watching with the hope these issues will resolve themselves.
